The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney today announced that Professor Greg Whitwell has been appointed as the new Dean of the University of Sydney Business School. Professor Whitwell is currently Senior Deputy Dean of the Australian School of Business at UNSW, where he is also a Professor of Marketing.
He has also served as Deputy Dean and Director (Graduate School of Business and Economics) in the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne, and Chair, Academic Senate, U21 Global. He studied at Monash University, gaining a Bachelor of Economics and a PhD at the University of Melbourne.
Professor Whitwell's work in Economic History was the basis of his being awarded the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia Medal (a prize for excellence in scholarship).
"We are delighted to have attracted an academic of Professor Whitwell's experience and stature for this appointment. This is a great move for the Business School," Dr Spence said.
Professor Whitwell said that he felt privileged to be leading such an outstanding collection of academic and professional staff and such a diverse and talented student body.
"The University of Sydney Business School is committed to innovation and developing and honing leadership capabilities," he said.
"The MBA and Global Executive MBA are fine examples of this, as are the local, regional and international industry placement programs the School offers.
"I am also looking forward to being part of one of the world's truly great universities," he said.
The Vice-Chancellor thanked Professors David Grant and Tyrone Carlin who have served as co-deans over the past year.
"Their energetic leadership has resulted in the development of a new and innovative research strategy for the Business School, including the successful launch of industry focused research networks, as well as the current recruitment drive for new academic staff. Under their oversight, we have made significant improvements to the physical infrastructure that supports our research and teaching, notably through the creation of a purpose-designed campus for the MBA program and the substantial progress on the Abercrombie Precinct redevelopment," he said.
"We were particularly pleased that an international accreditation team visiting the University recently made a point of saying that under the leadership of the Co-Deans the Faculty had made significant progress," he said.
"We are grateful for the fine leadership we have had from Professors Grant and Carlin during the past year, and we look forward to seeing the Business School become even more successful in the future," Dr Spence said.
