Eton College appoints first woman deputy head 27 Nov 2016

Eton College has announced the nomination of Su Wijeratna to the post of Lower Master, the term given to the deputy headteacher.

Currently deputy headteacher at St Paul’s Girls’ School, Mrs Wijeratna, will reportedly take up the new position next September.

A geography teacher by training, she would replace Dr Bob Stephenson, a pharmacology expert who has held the position since 2003.

The role will involve standing in for Head Master Simon Henderson when he is absent, as well as overseeing boarding at the historic school and pastoral care.

Mrs Wijeratna began her career at Epsom College and has also worked at Eastbourne College and Haberdashers’ Aske Boys’ School.

She currently serves as a Foundation Governor at St Stephen’s Primary School, where her two daughters are educated.
