Introduction

National University of Ireland, Maynooth (Maynooth University) is a very distinctive university, a collegial institution focused on science and engineering, humanities, and social sciences, and equally committed to research, teaching and community engagement. Located in Ireland’s only university town, its distinctive features and character owe much to its unique history and heritage. It provides a high-quality educational experience to over 13,500 students on a campus with 18th century roots and 21st century dynamism. The strategic trajectory and accomplishments of Maynooth University, in the twenty years since its establishment as an autonomous public university, are exceptional, and a source of great pride to the university community, staff, students and alumni. Maynooth University is now acknowledged to be one of the leading young universities in the world, ranked 43rd in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) ‘Young Universities’ list. Maynooth University’s growing global reputation is based on the originality, quality, importance and impact of its research and scholarship, commitment to teaching and learning, the quality of academic programmes, and its leadership in widening participation in higher education. The sources of success are the dedication of its staff and the energy and engagement of its students.

Following impressive growth over the past 10 years under the leadership of Professor Philip Nolan, the Governing Authority is now seeking to appoint a new President to lead this outstanding University and to build on its strategic role at regional, national and international levels. Coming at a time of great change and challenge, the new President will be expected to create, articulate and deliver, in a collegial manner, a shared vision for the future to drive the continued development of Maynooth University. The successful candidate will provide both academic and executive leadership, will have a clear and consultative style, and will have the ability to inspire and motivate the whole university community, while being a strong external ambassador for the University. They will have a deep commitment to Maynooth University, its values, its strengths, and its civic mission to make a distinctive contribution to the national system of higher education and the public good.

Maynooth University values the enrichment that comes from a diverse community and seeks to promote equality, prevent discrimination and protect the human rights of each individual. Additionally, as an Athena SWAN Bronze Award Institute, they are committed to advancing gender equality and interculturalism across the University. The University aims to represent the diverse community they serve and welcome applications from all individuals.

Living in Maynooth

Maynooth University is located in the heart of Ireland's only university town – a small town with a grand history. Located 25km from the centre of Dublin in North Kildare its beautiful campus is closely integrated with the historic town of Maynooth, which is easily accessible by Road, Rail and Air. The town has a very diverse close-knit community, with a buzzing town centre midweek and a quieter, family atmosphere at weekends. Maynooth has excellent and easily accessible schools while most major sporting organisations have clubs in the town or in the vicinity of Maynooth.  Housing prices are on a par with Dublin but tend to be on larger sites.  North Kildare is home to major industries such as Intel and the Kerry Group and has a thriving service sector ranging from pubs and restaurants to retirement homes.

Dublin is Ireland’s capital city with a population of about 1.3 million people. It is a truly global city with an outstanding quality of life and there are academic and cultural experiences that reflect Irish values. Dublin’s laid-back attitude to business has led to the arts, culture and creative industries becoming vital components of the economy and it is seen as a great place to do business. It has also become a thriving tech hub, with the ICT and digital sector in Dublin now a leading driver in the region’s economy.

Being just a 30-minute drive or train journey to and from Dublin City Centre, Maynooth offers the perfect mix between the peace of rural Ireland and the excitement of urban living.
