Westminster Foundation for Democracy announces new CEO 27 May 2014

WFD has appointed Anthony Smith as its new Chief Executive Officer. Currently the International Relations Director at the Department for International Development, Anthony will take over as CEO on 19 August 2014. His previous roles with DFID include Director of Europe and Donor Relations, Deputy Director for Southern Africa and Head of the European Union Department. Anthony also has extensive experience with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office where he served as Director of European Political Affairs and Head of Common Foreign and Security Policy. Commenting on his new appointment he said,

“I am absolutely delighted to be joining WFD. Helping countries to build more inclusive, accountable and effective governance is central to Britain’s objectives in developing and transition countries, and something that I care deeply about. WFD brings together the best of Britain’s parliamentary history, experience and capacity to respond to contemporary challenges. That is exactly what is needed in many countries around the world, and the combination of party, parliamentary and civil society expertise makes WFD uniquely well-placed to support them. I hope that my own experience in both the FCO and DFID will help WFD as we respond to the opportunities ahead.”

WFD’s Chairman, Henry Bellingham expressed delight on behalf of all the Board about the appointment, adding,

“Anthony has the rare experience of having excelled in senior and demanding roles at both the FCO and DFID, and we are convinced that he is the ideal person to lead the Foundation through an important period of transition towards a dynamic future.'
